O le Pi Tautau

Gary Silipa

18 May - 08 June 2019

O le Pi Tautau is the alphabet that represents the letters used in gagana Samoa and serves as a tool for teaching the Samoan Language.

The classic teal A2-sized alphabet chart proudly hung in most Samoan migrant homes and was held in almost the same high regard as the national Samoan flag as a visual reminder of their Polynesian history.

In this pop-up visual art exhibition Gary dissects, deconstructs and focuses on different elements of the chart to create new contemporary work that analyse the Pi Tautau.

Proudly presented by The Good The Bad Gallery in association with Te Oro for Samoan Language Week 2019.
