STARRY STARRY NIGHT
Chalk & Cheese Art Collective (Carter Perawiti (7), Zachary Laing (6)), Emily Rose Wilson (10), Chantel Matthews, Emily Karaka
08 - 22 July 2023
STARRY STARRY NIGHT includes four generations brought together by the stars. As we engage in a time that acknowledges our past loved ones whilst facing the present day challenges within Aotearoa, we look to our tamariki to lead the way through their eyes. This exhibition explores concepts of matauranga, manaakitanga and whakawhanauntanga all operating under a tuakana/teina lens.
Carter Perawiti is
interested in design drawing using colour pens. He considers himself a
good artist who enjoys art because it makes him feel better and it is good for
oneself.
Zachary Laing is a painter who has a unique style. Inspired by Edvard Munch, the scream, he creates intuitively while having fun with the belief that sometimes you can make something good.
Chantel Matthews (Ngāti Hounuku, Ngāti Koata, Ngāti Tahinga, Ngāti Ikaunahi, Tainui Awhiro) is a New Zealand Contemporary Artist of Māori and English descent. With an interest in how women hold space and time her artworks mobilise the 'everyday' as a storytelling mechanism with objects being described as sculptural moments that explore social, political and cultural concerns through her own subjectivity as a woman, mother, artist and wahine Māori.
Emily Karaka was born in Auckland and is celebrated as one of New Zealand’s foremost cutting-edge painters. Often discussed as a post-modern expressionist, her work is known globally having been exhibited on all continents during her more than thirty-year career. Her work articulates a unique perspective in the cultural landscape of Aotearoa New Zealand.
11 Mayfair Place, Glen Innes, Auckland
